Watch: An emotional Nicolas Jarry gets overwhelming support from the Italian Open crowd as he loses to Alexander Zverev in the finals

Nicolas Jarry put up a valiant effort in the final against Alexander Zverev in Rome today, but it wasn’t meant to be for the Chilean. He had an unbelievable tournament, taking out Stefanos Tsitsipas and Tommy Paul en route to the final.

The dream run was put to an end today by Alexander Zverev, with a 6-4, 7-5 win. Despite this, the Italian crowd backed the underdog Nicolas Jarry throughout the match and well after it too.

During the awards ceremony, when Jarry was giving his speech, the camera panned to his wife and two sons and chants of “Ole Ole Ole Nico Nico” could be heard reverberating in the stadium. Teary-eyed, Jarry thanked his team after gracefully congratulating his opponent on the win. The chants added to the emotions of the moment.

Nicolas Jarry’s peculiar 2024 season so far

The Chilean number one and 28-year-old, Nicolas Jarry, has been on the tour for a long time now. He has had some great results throughout his career, but not consistently.

This year was no different as he had lost in the first round at 6 of the 9 tournaments he had played before the Italian Open, making just one tour-level final in five months. This data largely favored his opponents to win in almost all of the matches he played in Rome, but he proved the predictions wrong every time.

In what was an inspiring performance, Jarry defeated players who are well within the top twenty in the world to earn himself a place in the final of the Italian Open. This has been his best result on tour so far, after ten years of being on the circuit.
